Milling know-how
What does step2gcode really cost? Pricing and limits explained honestly
In short: your first model is completely free, with every feature included. What counts is the model, not the number of attempts: you can re-generate and download the same part as often as you like with different settings. Every further model costs 1 credit and stays free permanently after that, including new versions. No subscription, no automatic renewal, no account required.
Just as important as the price are the limits, and they are stated just as honestly here: step2gcode is a 2.5D tool, not a full CAM package.
Find out in five minutes whether it covers your part
- Check whether the part is 2.5D: flat faces, vertical walls, defined depths — no freeform surfaces. If it has some, step2gcode offers its 3D path (beta).
- Have your file ready: STEP, DXF or SVG, up to 5 MB.
- Upload it and look at the automatic detection — contours, pockets and holes appear in the preview.
- Enable whichever operations you need and check the preview.
- Download the G-code and test it as an air cut — all without an account and without payment details.
The pricing model in detail
No feature is locked. Chamfering, V-bit engraving, holding tabs, facing, laser mode and nesting are all available in free usage. Only the volume is limited: your first model is free, after that each additional model costs 1 credit, purchased via Stripe in packages starting at 4.90 euro including VAT.
Why per model and not per generation? Because good CAM means trying things out. Varying the tool diameter, step-down or strategy should not cost anything. The free model stays free, and a paid one stays free permanently. The current state is always shown directly in the app.
The technical limits
step2gcode is built for 2.5D machining: flat contours, pockets and holes with defined depths. Freeform surfaces are milled by a 3D path in beta (ball end mill from above, two setups where needed); multi-axis machining and turning are deliberately not covered — those require a full CAM package. Supported formats are STEP, DXF and SVG up to 5 MB; fair usage limits protect against abuse.
