Is an online G-code generator safe? Data and machine in focus
In short: data safety depends on the provider — with step2gcode, your file is transferred encrypted, used only to generate the G-code and deleted after 24 hours at the latest. Machine safety, on the other hand, does not depend on whether the G-code was created online or offline, but on whether you check it before the first run.
A crash almost never happens because a generator writes "wrong" G-code, but through the classics: wrong origin, wrong tool mounted, or a depth that does not match the sheet. These mistakes happen with every CAM — and a short routine catches them.

Check routine before the first run
- Check the preview in the generator: do contours, pockets and depths match the part you expect?
- Set the origin on the machine exactly as chosen in the generator (corner or centre, Z on surface or spoilboard).
- Check the tool: is the cutter mounted really the one the G-code was calculated for?
- Run the first pass as an air cut: set the Z origin a few millimetres above the workpiece and let the program run once without material contact.
- On the real start, keep a hand on the emergency stop or pause button until the first stepdowns have run cleanly.
Data safety: what happens to the file
With step2gcode, the transfer is TLS-encrypted, processing happens on servers in Germany, and the file is used exclusively to generate the G-code — no analysis, no sharing, deletion after 24 hours at the latest. No registration is required, so the file is not tied to any user profile. The details are in the privacy policy.
Can generated G-code damage the machine?
Honest answer: any G-code, operated incorrectly, can lead to a crash — whether it comes from Fusion 360, EstlCAM or an online generator. step2gcode uses safe retract heights between operations and material presets for feed and speed — still, the operator remains responsible: machines, clamping and workpieces vary too much for any program to guarantee safety unchecked.
The air cut from the routine above catches the typical mistakes before material or cutter take damage.
How to recognise trustworthy providers
A clear privacy policy with concrete deletion periods, encrypted connections, a complete legal notice, readable G-code instead of a black box — and no forced account just to try the tool.
